I don't know if you saw the news item a lttle while back where a Kiwi cop
tasered the family cat and then himself during an altercation in a domestic.
:-) Tasers were being trialed at the time and that set them back about two
years... Thank God they don't have guns. (There is a special Armed Offenders
Squad (a bit like SWAT) who are very professional and properly trained but
they are not called out unless someone presents a firearm.)

Sadly, (and partly due to the influence of American TV) kids here are
starting to think it's cool to have a gun and we are seeing more armed
robberies than was previously the case.

Inevitably, our cops will have to respond with weapons as a matter of
course, but we haven't got there yet and the general public feel pretty
strongly about it. There have been about 30 NZ cops killed in the line of
duty, over the last 120 years, but even 1 is too many. Again this is another
figure that is trending upward, so eventually we will have to arm the cops.

estimated there are 200,000,000 guns. That doesn't mean 2/3rds of the
population has firearms; guns are like cats, most gun/cat owners have more
than one. I'm guessing, therefore, that only about one hundred million
Americans are armed. I'm doing what I can to increase that number.

We now have 39 states that have "shall issue" concealed handgun licenses.
"Shall issue" mean that an applicant who meets the statutory requirements
MUST be awarded the license - there is no discretion on the part of the
licensing agency. The remaining states (except Illinois and D.C.) have
discretionary licensing procedures. Only in Illinois (former residence of
our president) and Washington, D.C. (current home of our president) prohibit
concealed carry in all cases.

Our cops, in contradistinction to yours, often respond to a crime in
progress with overwhelming force. Sometimes they kill everything in sight -
including dogs or an owl sitting on a branch merely observing the mayhem.

On the plus side, the cops rarely shoot each other.

Like you say: Each to his own. I couldn't imagine wanting to own a gun, but
I don't live where you do so I certainly wouldn't judge. I guess if someone
actually invaded my house or held me up, I might feel differently, but, at
least for now, the prospect of owning a gun has no appeal to me.

I have some friends in different parts of the USA and even the most liberal
of them has a gun somewhere in the house. (I was surprised, but it is really
just a difference in culture and not "right" or "wrong".)

I struggle to understand why a State would pass such legislation. Wouldn't
everyone feel better if they knew that SOMEBODY used their discretion before

Carrying a concealed weapon is an offence here. Some kids carry knives
